Persuasion Essay for More Classes on Environmental Justice
Linked below is one of my essays written for my history class in which I was asked to write a persuasive essay to the department of my choice. Written to the Alvord Center, I requested and exhorted the center to work with the academic deans to create more classes focusing on environmental justice. There is a very extensive and hidden history behind environmental injustices that occurs within our country and around the world, and I believe that in dedicating a class to learning soley about that history as well as the injustices today would be a great advancement to the Loomis community. Furthermore, while Loomis does offer incredible study abroad opportunities to learn about sustainability and has many clubs and student organizations that work on making Loomis a very environmentally conscious community, having a class to learn about the social justice aspect of environmental sustainability would greatly advance the minds of students and faculty alike. Lastly, in regards to the Alvord Center Engaged Citizenship Matrix, this essay pushes the two concepts of seeking knowledge and enhancing understanding as it emphasizes the importance of reflecting on one's own environmental identity as well as recognizing and evaluating the implications of one's actions on nature.
